Enkaustikos XD Wax Medium (440g)
Description
XD Wax Medium
Available in a 440g pack of 16 ‘disks’
XD medium is shinier, harder, and more translucent than regular encaustic wax medium. XD wax medium can be used as a paint extender, especially if you want to extend heavily for glossy, transparent glazes. Used as a top coat on smooth surfaces, it yields a hard glossy finish with incredible transparency when applied thinly. XD is also a suitable medium to use as a protective coat over watercolour or gouache, thus eliminating the need for the art work to be put behind glass.
XD wax medium gets it’s name from the extra damar Enkaustikos use to make it, 1 part damar : 1 part beeswax. It has a thicker consistency than the original Enkaustikos medium when liquefied. It also has a sticky tack while drying for easy texture build up and will stay pliable longer than the original wax medium. Once cooled it is resistant to surface alterations from scraping or incising and offers a hard film.
Here's a clever tip
XD is not only used as a top coat or to enhance your paints. You can easily make your own wax medium by adding refined beeswax to it. This omits the laborious task of filtering damar resin yourself.
Here is how to make your own beeswax and damar resin encaustic medium in any concentration.
XD Wax Medium comes in a 30gram disc. Starting with 4 discs of XD, add the following amount of refined beeswax to make your desired beeswax to damar formulation.
340g of beeswax will yield a 7 to 1 ratio
283g of beeswax will yield a 6 to 1 ratio
227g of beeswax will yield a 5 to 1 ratio
170g of beeswax will yield a 4 to 1 ratio
113g of beeswax will yield a 3 to 1 ratio
57g of beeswax will yield a 2 to 1 ratio
